Hosea 10:1 reads: “Israel was a spreading vine; he brought forth fruit for himself. As his fruit increased, he built more altars; as his land prospered, he adorned his sacred stones.”
This text really caught my attention—it felt like a personal warning not to strive so hard to produce fruitfulness on my own.
I’m not in control, and I can’t rely on my own self-sufficiency. Since the beginning of time, humanity has sought after other gods and higher powers to idolize. But now, at least in western culture, we’ve not turned to other gods, but we’ve made ourselves our own gods. We elevate ourselves and march to the beat of our own drum.
This is a dangerous place to be in.
The more beautiful, alternative option is to choose a life of complete surrender and humility. Submission to a God who is completely in love with you and has your best interest in mind and defends the oppressed, the abused, the overlooked, the voiceless, and the refugee is a really good place to be in. He forms you into a person of love and He himself is the fruit you’re striving for.
